About the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Our Identity
We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.

As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.
Our Confession
As members of the Christian Church,
We confess
Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
- Matthew 16:16
Our Vision
To be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice.
– Micah 6:8
Our Mission

To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps “to the ends of the earth.”
 – Acts 1:8

About Peoria

Picture
The lands that would, one day, become Peoria, were first settled by the indigenous Kiikaapoi,  Peoria,  Kaskaskia, Sauk and Meskwaki peoples, among others, who made up the affiliation of tribes called the Illinois Confederation, or Illini. They hunted, farmed, tended and lived on the land long before Europeans arrived.

The French explorers who were the first Europeans to claim the land ventured up the Illinois River from the Mississippi in approximately 1680.
The County of Peoria was organized in 1825. Peoria was incorporated as a village on March 11, 1835 and as a city in 1845.

Peoria was named after a group of the indigenous peoples, though it was probably a mishearing of the autonym these peoples called themselves.  A 21st-century proposal of the meaning of the name "Peoria" suggests a derivation from a proto-Algonquian word meaning "to dream with the help of Manitou (God)."

As our city continues to change, our prayer at MCC is that we might also dream God's dreams for this place and act to recognize and foster the growth of God's kingdom, here and now, in Peoria.
